The Wooden Wick Soaked in Avocado Oil: Why We Do What No One Else Does

|Sweetwick

Walk into any candle shop and you'll find cotton wicks. Maybe the occasional wood chip. What you won't find is a wooden wick soaked in avocado oil — which is exactly what makes Sweetwick different.

Why Avocado Oil?

Avocado oil has one of the highest smoke points of any natural oil — around 520°F. That means when our wooden wick ignites, the oil burns cleanly, without the sooty residue that cheaper oils leave behind. It's also food-grade, meaning it's held to higher purity standards than industrial fragrance oils.

The avocado oil soaking process helps the wooden wick ignite more consistently on first light, maintain a steady flame, and produce that signature soft crackling sound — the one that reminds you of a fireplace.

The Crackling Sound Is Intentional

Wooden wicks naturally crackle as they burn. Soaked in avocado oil, this effect is amplified just enough to be noticeable without being distracting. It's one of those details you only notice once — and then you can't stop noticing it.

How to Care for a Wooden Wick

Wooden wicks behave differently from cotton. Here's what you need to know:

  • Trim to 1/8 inch (3mm) before every burn — shorter than a cotton wick
  • On first light, hold the flame across the full width of the wick, not just the tip
  • If the flame looks weak or keeps going out, gently clear any charred wood from the tip and relight
  • The first burn should last at least 2–3 hours to create an even melt pool

Take care of the wick and the wick takes care of you.
